AWAPATENT AB FREDRIKSONS VERKSTADS ABKontor/Handläggare Ansökningsnr Vår referensLinköping/Sofia Zander Jakobsson/OPN 8521045760 CONVEYOR BELT CHAIN AND METHOD OF ASSEMBLEY Technical field The invention relates to a conveyor beit chain for transporting objectsbetween various working stations in an industrial environment, such as e.g.the pharmaceutical or food industry and to a method of assembling the conveyor beit chain.
BackgroundUS 4,895,248 discioses a conveyor belt chain comprising a plurality of identical links, wherein each link has a head portion and two leg portions. Ahead portion of a first leg portion is interconnectabie with the leg portions of asecond link via a bearing pin, which directly engages the leg portions, and abushing, which in turn directly engages the head portion. The bearing pindirectly engages the bushing..
The bushing is insertable into the head-portion through a movement ina direction which is substantially perpendicular to a load-bearing surface ofthe conveyor belt chain.
FR 2 564 81OA1 discioses a conveying chain, which comprises chainlinks made of a plastics material and pins that ensure a link and an articulatedcoupling between them, each link having openings intended to receive thepins. The pins comprises, at one of their ends, immobilizing means which are I intended to engage the links by elastic deformation of the plastics material.
Summarylt is an object of the present invention to provide a conveyor beit chain which is more compact, presents less play between the links and which thus can be run at a higher speed.
The invention is defined by the appended independent claims.Embodiments are set forth in the appended dependent claims and in thefollowing description and drawings. . 2010-02-03 10.03 V:MN00rganisatiomFREDRü/(SONS VERKSTADS AsPATENT_No|=ami|ysE2io457em2010020231oasïßomAppiicalzonrexgszidoc According to a first aspect, there is provided a conveyor belt chaincomprising at least two substantially identicai links, wherein each link has ahead portion and two leg portions. The head portion of the first link isinterconnectabie with the ieg portions of the second link via a bushing, whichdirectly engages the head portion and a bearing pin, which directly engagesthe leg portions and the bushing. The head portion presents a recess, whichhas opening, open in a direction towards the leg portions, and which openingallows for the bushing to be introduced into the recess past the leg portionsand in a direction substantially paralle! to the travel direction of the conveyorbelt chain, when the conveyor bett chain is being assembled.
By this arrangement it is possible to introduce the bushing past the legportions instead of through a movement in a direction which is substantiallyperpendicular to the load bearing surface of the conveyor belt. lt allows for theconveyor belt chain to be more compact, since it is not necessary to rely onthe material of the leg portions for force transfer to the same extent. lnstead, more of the head portion can be used for the force transfer, in that the headportion can be closed in three directions and .the bushing takes up the mainportion of the wear from the bearing pin.
According to one embodiment, the outline of the recess, seen in aplane perpendicular to the travel direction, may be substantially shaped tocorrespond to the shape of the bushing as seen in a corresponding plane.
The head portion may be substantially closed in a directionperpendicular to a load bearing p_1ane of the conveyor belt chain.
The bushing may present a through hole substantially aligned with twopin openings arranged in the head portion, when the conveyor belt chain isassembled, whereby the bearing pin may be introduceable through the pinopenings and the through hole.
According to a second aspect there is provided a method ofassembling a conveyor belt chain, comprising at least two substantiallyidentical links, wherein each link has a head portion and two leg portions, andwherein the head portion presents a recess, which comprises an openingopen in a direction towards the leg portions. The method comprises the stepsof introducing a bushing into the recess of a first link by moving the bushing 2010-02-03 10.03 V:_N00l'gani$ati0nFREDRIKSONS VERKSTADSABPATENT_NOFami¥ySE21045 602010Û202_2104576G_Applicati0MBXLSZJIÉGC H20 25. 3 past the leg portions, in a direction substantially parallel to the travel directionof the conveyor belt chain and introducing the head portion comprising thebushing between the feg portions of a second link. The method furthercomprises the step of introducing a bearing pin through openings of the legportions and head portion respectively, and a through hole of the bushing, such that the bearing pin directiy engages the leg portions and the bushing, ' and that the bushing directly engages the head portion and the bearing pin.
Brief description of the d rawinqs Embodirnents of the present solution will now be described, by way ofexample, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings.
Fig. 1 is a schematic section of a conveyor belt chain.
Fig. 2 is three conveyor belt links in a sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an exploded view of a conveyor belt link.
Detailed descriptionFig. 1 illustrate a conveyor belt chain 1 which is formed by a plurality of substantially identical links 10.
Fig. 2 illustarate that the links 10 are connected to each other to form achain 1. The links 10 are connected and arranged such that a surface 17 of ahead portion 13 is directed in the travel direction T of the conveyor belt chain1.
Fig. 3 illustrates that the links 10 are connected to each other, i.e. theconveyor belt chain 1 is assembled, by introducing the head portion 13 of afirst link between the leg portions 12a, 12b of an adjacent, second link 10 andsecuring them with a bushing 30 and a bearing pin 20. The chain 1 is thusformed by connecting a plurality of links together.
The bearing pin 20 is inserted though pin openings 15a, 15b of the legportions 12a, 12b, through pin openings 14a, 14b of the head portion 13 andthrough a through hole 31 of the bushing 30.
Before the bearing pin 20 is inserted the bushing is introduced in arecess 16 formed in the head portion 13.
The recess 16 is formed to accommodate the bushing 30, the outline ofthe recess 16, as seen in a plane perpendicular to the travel direction T is substantially shaped to correspond to the shape of the bushing as seen in a 2010-02-03 10.03 vnmNoorganisaiioniFnizoaiksons vERksT/xosABPATENT_Noi=am:iysE2104s76020100202_21ozifflsofippiißaiiontexgszrdoq _25- -30 4 corresponding plane. The recess 16 has an opening 18 which faces the legportions 12a, 12b. During assembly of the chain 1, the bushing is introducedpast the leg portions 12a, 12b, through the opening 18 into the recess 16,such that the through hole 31 is aligned with the pin openings 14a, 14b of thehead portion 13. The bushing 30 is thus introduced into the recess 17 by amovement substantially parallel with the travel direction T of the conveyor beltchain 1.
The recess 16 is closed by walls 19a, 19b, 19c, where the wall 19acorresponds to the surface 17 and is parallell to the load hearing plane L.Walls 19b and 19c close the recess 16 in a direction perpendicular to a loadbearing plane L of the conveyor belt chain 1. ' To connect a first link 1 with a second link 1, the head portion 13, withthe already inserted bushing- 30, of the first link, is introduced between the legportions 12a, 12b of the second link, and the bearing pin 20 is insertedthrough the pin openings 15a, 14a, the trough hole 31, and through the pinopenings 14b and 15b.
The pin openings 15a, 15b, 14a, 14b and the trough hole 31 areformed to directly engage the bearing pin 20, thereby allowing for some pEaybetween the walls of the openings and trough hole such that the link issubstantialiy freely rotatable about the bearing pin 20, to allow for theconveyor belt chain 1 to move in a plane parallel to the load bearing surface _ 11, which can be seen in Fig. 1.
The head portion 13, the bushing 30 and leg portions 12a, 12b arearranged to allow for some play between them such that the chain 1 ismoveable in a plane perpendicular to the load bearing surface 11, which canbe seen in Fig. 2. The conveyor belt chain thus has a double degree offreedom, and can foliow winding paths, in that the chain can be curved bothinside and outside the conveyor belt plane.
The load bearing surface 11 and the link 10 may be formed in onepiece.
The ioad bearing surface 11 may be integrated with the iink 10. 2010-02-03 10.03 V:_NoOrganisatioruFREDRlKâONS VERKSTADSABPATEN'I'_NOFamiIySE2'š04576020100202_2104576Û__App|ICaÜOntGXLSZJJIIOC 5 Alternatively the load bearing surface 11 is attachable to the link 10, toallow for a plurality of different constructions of the load bearing surface 11 tobe employed together with the link.
According to one embodiment the links 1 are made in one piece. Thelinks may be made from a plastics material. The bushing 30 may be madefrom a plastics material or alternatively a different material such as steel or a suitable alioy. 2010-02-03 10.03 V:_N0OrganisatiomFREDRlKsONS VERKSTADSABPATENT_NoFamilySE21045T6020100202_21045760_App|icationtext_SZJ.doo
